Blackpool to have gas mains replaced
Article date : 10/09/2008
The National Grid has announced it is to replace gas mains in Blackpool as part of a £84 million plan to improve the gas infrastructure of the north-west.
Work will start on September 29th to replace 256 metres of low and medium pressure gas mains in Blackpool and will take until the end of March to complete.
Metallic mains will be replaced with plastic ones, which if left alone should last for 80 years, the National Grid website reports.
The north-west is expected to see 565 kilometres of gas mains replaced over 2008-9.
"We need to renew these gas mains so that local people can continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come," Craig Horrocks, National Grid term contract manager says.
In May 2007, 50 pupils at a secondary school in Manchester were taken to hospital after a suspected gas leak in the science block, which turned out to be CS gas or mace spray, the South Manchester Reporter said at the time.
The Energy Saving Trust advises that all conventional and energy-efficient
condensing boilers should be fitted by a gas installer registered with the Council of Registered Gas Installers (Corgi) to ensure
boilers are safe.
