Jazz up those radiators

Article date : 30/01/2009

While radiators may not immediately spring to mind when it comes to a home interiors' features, Britons can take steps to jazz up their heating units to complement the space around them.

Ami Abernaz, in an article for the Boston Globe, explains that placing a wooden cover over an old radiator can give it an instant update and may even double up as an attractive window seat, shelf or bookcase extension.

"The finished covers are not only aesthetically pleasing, but can make a room safer for curious toddlers," she adds.

Furthermore, radiator covers can be stained or varnished to fit in with the decor of a room.

Ms Abernaz states: "The most cost-effective solution to coexisting with an unsightly radiator is to try to give it new life with a fresh coat of paint."

However, homeowners may wish to invest in a totally new heating unit and could find that contemporary radiators, vertical radiators or modern radiators fit well with the design scheme of any room.

And Britons looking for ways to increase the heat output of their radiators can fit a piece of foil behind the unit, which will reflect heat back around the room, rather than letting it get absorbed into the wall.
