One of the New York skyline's most famous landmarks is set to go green as part of a $500 million (£340 million) refurbishment scheme, it has been noted.

The Empire State building - one of the city's original skyscrapers - will see a makeover taking place over the next four years which has been designed to reduce its energy consumption by 38 per cent.

This could see energy bills at the building being reduced by as much as $4.4 million each year.

All the windows in the tower will receive additional insulation, as will each of the landmark's radiators.

Furthermore, the air conditioning system will be given an environmental boost, while office workers will be encouraged to monitor the emissions their part of the building is producing through a program on their computers.

There are a number of steps homeowners can take to boost the efficiency of their own radiators.

These include installing heating controls on central heating systems - to ensure no heat is wasted in unoccupied rooms - and placing foil behind radiators to reflect warm air around the rooms and stop it from being absorbed into the walls or lost through windows.
