Being heat efficient 'can no longer be avoided'Written by Jasper Cullen

With energy bills on the rise, Britons can no longer afford to put off becoming heat efficient, one newspaper has claimed.

According to the Independent, without ensuring insulation is as efficient as it should be, properties could be wasting energy and paying over the odds for utilities by allowing heat to leak through the walls, ceilings, floors, windows and doors.

And while this may not break the bank right away, the newspaper asserts that it will all add up over the long term.

The publication advises that in addition to topping up insulation, closing the curtains at dusk and fitting draught-excluders can also make a difference.

"You can also save by installing individual thermostatic controls on radiators to let you set the temperature in each room. So if you are mainly in one room, you don't have to pay to heat the whole house. A reduction of one degree on your thermostat can make savings in the long term," it added.

Britons may also wish to consider investing in a condensing boiler, which the Energy Saving Trust claims could save them over £200 on their annual heating bills.
