The lifetime cost of bills 'almost £100,000'Written by Tony Harrison

Between the ages of 18 and 70, Britons can expect to pay out almost £100,000 on basic household bills such as their mortgage or rent, groceries, utilities and insurance policies, it has been revealed.

As a result, homeowners may wish to make cuts to these outgoings wherever possible and giving central heating systems a green overhaul may be a good place to start.

The research by Confused.com reveals that Britons spend some £97.29 a month on their utilities, which equates to £1,167.48 a year.

This, in turn, works out as £60,708.96 over the course of a lifetime, which could leave households keen to make some changes.

And simple additions to central heating systems - such as a new set of heating controls - could turn down the heat on people's outgoings by as much as £70, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Meanwhile, a condensing boiler could result in a £250 annual saving.

As Gareth Kloet from Confused.com notes: "Saving money on the regular bills you have to pay can mean not having to cut back on the fun things you enjoy."
