Cash boost announced 'to lower energy bills'Written by Tony Harrison

A £84 million cash pot has been announced by the Homes and Communities Agency to make homes more energy efficient.

The financial injection will be shared across 46 areas in the country to help reduce carbon emissions and to lower energy bills through cavity wall insulation.

Cavity wall insulation will be provided for up to 11,000 difficult-to-fill homes under the Social Housing Energy Saving Programme.

Energy bills can also be lowered with the installation of a condensing boiler and full heating controls on central heating systems, which could save households £235 a year, the Energy Saving Trust notes.

Housing minister John Healey said: "Homes account for a quarter of our CO2 emissions and the majority of the homes people will be living in 50 years from now have already been built."

Individuals who do not plan to move into a new-build property may find that fitting a condensing boiler with heating controls is a first step in making their home greener to lower energy bills.
