Consumers have been advised that by changing the way they pay for their energy bills they could reduce their outgoings - which may prove valuable during the credit crunch, particularly if the savings are put towards energy efficient technology, such as a
condensing boiler.
According to moneysupermarket.com, if every UK household which currently pays via cheque or cash on a monthly basis for utilities switched to a monthly direct debit, the total saved would amount to £2.3 billion.
On an individual basis, this equates to £170 per household, money which could prove valuable amid the recession and could be put towards funding a new boiler.
Utilities manager at the price comparison site Scott Byrom pointed to another advantage of the payment method, saying: "This option allows bill payers to spread the cost of their gas and electricity bills equally each month."
Britons may find that combining a
condensing boiler with
heating controls could reduce their energy bills further still, saving as much as a third each year.
