Wind energy 'offers comprehensive benefits'
Article date : 22/07/2010

The economy, employment and the security of utilities could all receive a boost if the take-up of wind energy grows in the UK, it has been suggested.
Nick Medic, head of communications at RenewableUK, said that the use of wind power is a "win-win" situation, with its contribution to the country's carbon emissions reduction targets among its benefits.
In addition, it could help to secure Britain's energy security and provide a source of power that is cheaper than fossil fuels, while it could also help to create jobs.
"On the back of this ambitious roll-out of renewables, we're looking to have jobs created by 2020 and also business opportunities and indirect jobs for local communities," Mr Medic added.
His comments come after the European Wind Energy Association revealed that offshore wind power could achieve a record year in 2010.
Indeed, in the first six months of the year, 118 new offshore wind turbines were hooked up to the National Grid, with a combined capacity of 333 MW.
