UK's renewable energy efforts "embarrassing"
Article date : 19/07/2010

The UK has fallen behind many European nations when it comes to hitting its renewable energy targets, one sector commentator has claimed.
A spokeswoman for the Renewable Energy Centre.co.uk said that Germany is ahead of Britain when it comes to embracing sustainable living.
"We are still only now getting to grips with the required levels of renewable energy that the UK needs to produce to avoid hefty fines from the EU if we do not meet the targets by 2020," she explained.
The representative went on to urge that investment is essential if the country is going to contribute in a significant way to the renewable power sector and that this funding will continue to be important in spite of the financial crisis.
Homeowners can do their own bit to generate their own clean energy by purchasing technology such as solar panels.
In addition to reducing their utility bills, Britons could also be paid for the energy they produce through the government's Feed-in Tariff and receive further cash if they direct any excess power to the National Grid.
Elsewhere, figures from Eurostat recently revealed that the UK had one of the lowest renewable energy shares during 2008.
