Renewable energy 'could be as big as gas'
Article date : 05/07/2010

Renewable energy could be set to become as popular and far-reaching as oil and gas power, one sector commentator has revealed.
Indeed, Britons looking to reduce their own carbon footprints and save money on their utility bills could consider adding solar panels to their
central heating systems in order to boost their hot water supply.
John Sinclair, managing director at Subocean Group, said that wind energy is also likely to become an important resource in the UK, explaining that the offshore renewable market looks sustainable and could present plenty of opportunities.
He added that it will be worthwhile encouraging young people to learn more about the technology at school and university and demonstrate to them the career prospects they could gain from the industry.
"There are vital lessons that we can learn from the oil and gas industries to ensure that the offshore wind renewables industry delivers," Mr Sinclair explained.
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, total electricity generation from all renewable sources in 2009 was 25,222GWh.
This was an increase of 17 per cent on 2007 figures.
