Legislation 'should enable firms to improve energy efficiency'This week, climate change minister Greg Barker launched the initial stages of the government's draft Microgeneration Strategy, which aims to help UK communities improve their energy efficiency when it comes to their heating and power consumption.

Using a Feed-in Tariff, he revealed that homeowners and public organisations would be guaranteed cash payments for the electricity they produce through technologies such as solar panels and wind power.

In addition to this, people will receive a payment for any electricity they direct to the National Grid.

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, to date 100,000 homes and businesses have installed microgeneration technology.

Meanwhile, commenting on the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, Don Jordison, managing director at Threadneedle, said that businesses will be encouraged to manage or refurbish their premises in a way that makes them as efficient as possible.

This may include modernising central heating systems to include solar panels or a condensing boiler.

He added: "This legislation is coming through at a very low point in the economy so there is very much a parallel between the legislative need for lower energy and the need among occupiers and owners to get their bills down."
