Government 'pledges to make homes energy efficient'
Article date : 03/03/2010

Energy efficiency and reducing domestic carbon emissions has been put firmly on the government's agenda, following its announced of a new green strategy.
Under the plans announced yesterday (March 2nd) by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, up to seven million households are set to benefit from eco upgrades by the year 2020.
Britons will be able to apply for green loans to put towards environmentally friendly improvements to their homes.
This debt would be attached to the property - rather than the owner - and would be paid back through utility bills, which should be reduced by a significant amount once the improvements have been completed.
The government has also committed itself to improving the insulation of millions of UK homes in an effort to help people reduce their bills.
Furthermore, every household in the country is set to have a smart meter installed which could help people to become more energy efficient, as it illustrates where in their home they are using the most power.
The strategy is just the latest in a number of government initiatives designed to give the country's housing stock a makeover - including the ongoing
boiler scrappage scheme.
