Could central heating systems be greener in self-builds?
Article date : 01/03/2010

People who wish to reduce their carbon emissions and lead more energy efficient lives may have in the past considered building their own property - and one sector commentator has claimed now is the perfect time to take on such a project.
Raymond Connor, chief executive of BuildStore, explained there is a growing appetite in the UK for second homes, while conditions for people building their own are also proving favourable.
He explained this is because the cost of land, building materials and labour is falling, while the availability of suitable plots in on the rise.
Mr Connor added: "With a low supply of quality homes and such good savings to be made right now in terms of land, labour rates and materials prices, there has never been a better time, or more affordable time, to build your own house."
And he went on to state building a home from scratch is a "great" way for people to get the property they want without breaking the bank.
Britons wishing to keep the carbon footprint of their self-build to a minimum may wish to invest in the latest renewable energy technology - such as solar panels.
Indeed, there may never have been a better time to install solar panels to boost
central heating systems, as from April, consumers will receive cash for the power they generate using the technology.
