Gas boiler-heated water 'greener way of washing dishes'
Article date : 18/08/2010

When it comes to living a more energy efficient lifestyle, Britons could find that going green starts with washing the dishes.
According to the Guardian, washing the crockery by hand is less damaging to the environment than using a dishwasher.
This is because most homes in the UK rely on water that is heated by a
gas boiler, while dishwashers use cold water that is heated up through electricity.
"A modern
boiler can capture more than 90 per cent of the energy in the gas, whereas most of the energy in the fuel used to generate electricity is wasted in generation and transmission," the article explains.
However, it adds that people should avoid leaving their hot water tap running, as this can lead to a higher carbon footprint than that attached to a dishwasher, meaning people should be careful to conserve their energy.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, a modern
condensing boiler converts 86 per cent or more of its fuel into heat.
