Brits 'should check home insurance policies'
Article date : 19/08/2010

Britons have been urged to talk to an insurance adviser when it comes to purchasing home insurance to ensure that they are getting the best deal for their needs.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said many consumers fail to seek these recommendations but simply head online and purchase the policy that looks the cheapest.
He added that home cover is likely to have an occupancy clause which is worth checking as they can differ.
This clause requires that the holder does not leave their property unattended for a set number of days, or they could be in risk of violating it.
If people are planning to spend an extended period away from their home, Mr Trudgill advised them to inform their insurance provider as there may be certain things they have to do.
"You might have to have a neighbour check the house every couple of days, or be required to switch the water off in the summertime, or to turn the central heating on a minimum of ten degrees in the winter," he advised.
Home insurance could provide people with cover in the event that their
gas boiler causes a fire that results in damage being caused to their property or belongings.
