Prince: Old building tricks better
Article date : 12/10/2008
The Prince of Wales has criticised builders who add emission-reducing measures to homes that were not efficient to begin with.
According to online resource New Builder, Prince Charles said that adding wind turbines, solar panels, water heaters and sedum roofs to glass, steel and concrete structures may not be the answer.
He told House and Garden magazine that builders should embrace traditional measures and materials, along with eco-technology in order to create new efficient properties.
Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council said: "[The prince] risks undermining the efforts of UK's emerging green building industry, the vast majority of whom are designing an increasingly large number of fantastic buildings."
For those of you looking to save money the traditional way, the Energy Savings Trust recommends turning the thermostat on a
water heater boiler down to 60 degrees centigrade, while installing
heating controls on
central heating systems could, when combined with a
condensing boiler, reduce energy bills by up to £270.
