Homeowners keen to reduce both their carbon footprint and their energy bills may find that help is at hand should government plans to install smart meters in every UK property by 2020 be given the go-ahead.
Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch.com, exclaimed that the meters were still a relatively new technology but that they were becoming an increasingly popular idea.
"They allow you to manage your usage better and have a real-time view of what you are spending," he added.
Mr Marples went on to note that smart meters allowed consumers to manage their energy consumption more effectively, while also helping them to become more energy efficient.
However, consumers who do not wish to wait until 2020 for lower energy bills could find that there are ways for them to take action now.
The Energy Saving Trust notes that a
condensing boiler could be one way of achieving reduced utility bills, as they can lower the annual energy spend of households by £275, particularly when used with the correct
heating controls.
