Pupils at a school in Dorchester will be able to learn about energy efficiency first-hand, following the installation of a
new boiler.
St Osmund's Middle School has become the first school in the south-west of the UK to have a biomass
boiler fitted under the South West Bioheat Programme, the Dorset Echo reports.
In order to meet the costs of purchasing and fitting the
new boiler, the educational establishment received a £63,000 grant as part of the programme.
And headteacher Ron Jenkinson said that the school was now a pioneer, being the first to invest in a woodchip biomass
boiler.
He told the local newspaper: "For us, a large part of the success of the scheme will be if we can use the biomass
boiler to trigger a major impact on our children's understanding of the importance of sustainability."
The decision was made to purchase the
new boiler after its two original
boilers failed last year.
Another school to go green recently was Gulworthy Primary School near Tavistock, which has also had a biomass
boiler fitted.
