Investing in a Green New Deal could see much valuable funding being saved at a time when the UK is struggling through the recession and facing mounting debt, one writer has claimed.
The Guardian's Peter Tatchell recommended scrapping public spending on projects such as war technology and the computerisation of the NHS in favour of a Roosevelt-style "Green New Deal" which could not only help to reduce financial outgoings but will also "dramatically shrink" the country's carbon footprint.
He explained that the 2002 Energy review advised that the UK could cut its energy consumption by a third by investing in energy efficient
boilers - such as
condensing boilers and
combination boilers - along with purchasing double glazing and switching to low-energy lighting.
"A serious programme of energy conservation and efficiency would dramatically shrink the UK's carbon footprint. It would also cut household fuel bills," he explained.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently urged Britons to make use of a £10 million fund to make their homes greener - which may be achieved in part by investing in an energy efficient
new boiler.
