The government has invited communities to apply for a share of £10 million on offer under the Low Carbon Communities Challenge.
One way the Department of Energy and Climate Change suggested the money could be spent is to retrofit properties, which could include overhauling
central heating systems and replacing old and inefficient
boilers with more up-to-date and greener
condensing boilers.
By 2050, greenhouse gas emissions from electrical appliances, heating and lighting need to be almost zero in order to support the UK in reducing its emissions by 80 per cent.
As such, local action is important, the government claimed. Residents may want to replace their old
boilers with more energy efficient
condensing boilers, which when installed with
heating controls, could cut carbon dioxide emissions in a home and reduce energy bills by up to £235 a year, the Energy Saving Trust has noted.
"The challenge is an opportunity for communities to lead the way so that everyone can play their part in tacking climate change and save money on fuel bills," asserted energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband.
