Britons 'should be educated to go green'Written by Tony Harrison

Households in the UK need to be provided with further education on how best they can reduce their energy use, one sector commentator has claimed - which may include making people aware of the benefits of condensing boilers.

Rebecca Atkinson, news editor at Moneywise, made her comments after it was revealed that the government, in partnership with the think tank the Green Fiscal Commission, has proposed levying a green tax on the cost of household utility bills.

It is hoped that charging people a duty on their gas and electricity use could see the country in a better position to reduce its domestic carbon emissions.

However, Ms Atkinson stated that such a tax would not be welcomed at a time when many people are already feeling the pressure of increasing utility bills on their household budgets.

"There needs to be more education about how families can reduce their energy usage - which would save them money and be beneficial to the environment - rather than introducing more taxation on essential costs," she explained.

Britons looking for ways to reduce their energy bills may wish to modernise their central heating systems by adding a condensing boiler - which could reduce such bills by as much as a third annually, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
