As the recession puts increasing pressure on the housing market, more homeowners may be considering staying put rather than looking for a new property to buy.
However, those who live in older properties may find that their home is not as efficient as it could be, leading to a higher carbon footprint and increasing energy bills.
With this in mind, the Guardian asserts that carrying out a retrofit of a home may be advisable.
The newspaper recommends that Britons make investing in a
condensing boiler to replace an older model of
gas boiler a priority.
"Replacing it with an A-rated
condensing boiler, with a good thermostat, could cut your heating bills by as much as £235 a year and save 1,300kg of carbon," the article explains.
Further steps which could give
central heating systems a boost include lowering the thermostat by one degree Celsius to lower annual gas bills by a further £55.
When arranging to have a
new boiler fitted Britons should contact a
boiler engineer who is Gas Safe registered.
