Millions of properties 'in need of new boiler'

Millions of properties 'in need of new boiler'Across the country, there are millions of households which could improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon emissions by modernising their central heating systems with a new boiler, it has been claimed.

Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, said in order to meet the UK's carbon emission reduction commitment, an overhaul of older homes would be needed, which would include installing double glazing, insulation and new boilers.

"It is very important to have a boiler which is a high efficiency one, is a high tech boiler [and] which can provide you with 90 to 95 per cent," Mr Leech advised.

He added that this was in comparison to gas boilers being installed ten to 15 years ago - and still present in many homes - which are only 30 to 40 per cent efficient.

Britons planning to invest in a new boiler may wish to find out if they are eligible for the government's scrappage scheme, which could see them receiving £400 towards the cost of a new appliance.
