Huddersfield church launches boiler fundraiser
Article date : 11/08/2010

The congregation at one Huddersfield church is to be encouraged to donate towards the cost of a new
gas boiler for the place of worship.
According to the Huddersfield Examiner, St Mary's Church in Honley is hoping to raise £40,000 for the replacement, after being told by a
boiler engineer that the current model is obsolete.
The old
gas boiler was installed in the 1960s after being donated by the former local department store Kayes.
Rev David Barnes said: “It has done a good job, after coming to us secondhand but a gas engineer has told us it is no longer safe to use."
He added that "time is of the essence" with winter fast approaching, meaning that visitors may wish to donate to ensure that they can stay cozy as they enjoy the nativity.
The cost of installing the
new boiler is high as the pipework is over 100 years' old.
Before the current
gas boiler was fitted, the church relied on a coke-fuelled appliance for its heat and hot water, with choirboys having the responsibility of keeping it running.
Elsewhere, following an investment from Punch Taverns, the Norwich Evening News reports that the Stanley pub has had
central heating systems fitted for the first time in its history.
