'Hitting back at energy firms' with boiler scrappage

'Hitting back at energy firms' with boiler scrappageAs temperatures plummeted and snow settled across much of the country, many Britons may have had no choice but to turn up their central heating systems and put their radiators on full during what was the coldest UK winter in 30 years.

However, now their energy bills have arrived from this period, they may be concerned about how they will pay them and what they can do to avoid such a high charge next winter.

Indeed, the Daily Mail reports many households have reacted with "outrage" that energy suppliers have seen their profits increase in the last year, despite the wholesale cost of gas and electricity falling.

As a result, the newspaper is urging people to "hit back" against the utility giants by taking steps to lower their bills.

One piece of advice is to take advantage of government schemes such as boiler scrappage or Warm Front.

Vulnerable or elderly households who are eligible for Warm Front can have help with improving their insulation and central heating systems.

Meanwhile, households with the least energy efficient boilers - those with a G rating - can apply to the Energy Saving Trust for £400 towards the cost of a condensing boiler - although they may wish to hurry, as vouchers are running out.
