A Welsh building firm that carried out an unlicensed removal of asbestos while replacing a
central heating boiler has been fined.
Wales Online reports that Pontypool-based Ron Couch Building Contractors appeared before Caerphilly Magistrates' Court recently, where it was heard workers had removed a door fitted with asbestos insulation board in order to take out the
boiler.
However, any work involving the substance must be conducted by a licensed contractor, leading the company to be fined £2,500 and ordered to pay costs of £1,250.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Steve Richardson said: "The company was well aware of its legal duties in terms of asbestos work as, prior to this incident, it carried out removal of the asbestos
boiler flue in a safe manner using qualified personnel."
DIY expert and winner of the first series of Big Brother Craig Phillips recently warned that asbestos can be found in the
boiler cupboards of many older properties and that it is important particular care should be taken when working with the hazardous material.
