Solar Heating Installation
Solar water heating systems collect energy from the sun via solar panels which are fitted to your roof. There are two types of solar panels, the flat plate panels or the evacuated tubes. They both offer you hot water throughout the year, but you will need to heat the water further with a boiler in the colder months. Your bills will be lower as sunlight is free and you will reduce your carbon dioxide emissions as solar water is green and renewable.
You will need around 5 square meters roof space facing east to west which receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day. Remember it is day light that powers them, not the suns heat. If your roof isn’t facing the right way you can fix panels to frames or flat roofs. Most modern boilers are compatible with solar heating so this shouldn’t be a problem. If your boiler is over 7 years old then a new modern condensing boiler would be needed. You need a heating system with a hot water tank, not a combi boiler.
If you live in England you won’t need planning permission, but it is always wise to let your local planning office your plans if you live in a listed building, or a building in conservation area or world heritage site. If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you will need to consult your local authority before the installation.
