Heating your home has never been so expensive. British Gas recently said that wholesale prices of gas are currently around 25% higher than they were last winter which is a strong signal that unless markets change, our gas bills will increase by another £150 more this year. Once you are on the cheapest tariff make sure you pay your bills by monthly direct debit as this means you will save 5-10%. The reason you get savings it that companies are confident that you won´t default and they earn interest on any overpayments. Any overpayments you make should be refunded at the end of the year. Also don´t always assume that dual fuel is cheapest as this is not always the case. If the company has an internet tariff, look at the costs, as many companies offer another 10% off standard tarriffs as they make savings by not having to post you bills. You will still get bills but by email.
Improving the energy efficiency of your home is one of the simplest ways of saving energy and combating the rising energy prices. Having proper insullation in your home, especially in your walls and lofts will make a huge difference to your bills. According to British Gas, having the recommend 10 1/2 inches of lost insulation could save you 25% on your bills. Home installation might not cost as much as you think and there are grants available. See the Energy Saving Trust´s Energy grant search for all types of home improvement grants.
Now lets look at your boiler. If it your boiler is over 10 years old you could be wasting up to half of the gas you buy. This is utter madness. You don´t do your weekly food shop and then come home and throw half away. Well this is what is happening with older boilers, half of your gas is getting thrown away. Installing a high efficiency condensing boiler will make a huge difference to your bills over time. The increase in efficiency of a condensing boiler is down to the extraction of heat from the gases which is normally wasted (ejected out of the flue) in non-condensing boilers.
You can also save money on heating bills by delaying when you switch your boiler on. Don´t be tempted to turn your heating on in October. Research shows is the most common time when people turn their heating on. If you can wait a few more weeks you will make a saving of around £19 a week. Also by turing your boiler down can save you on average a good 10% on your heating bill. If the normal temperature is 19-20%, try turning it down to 17 or 18 degrees.
