Solar PV systems work by using cells to convert sunlight into electricity. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels are generally fitted on a roof facing south, but they can also be self standing. Photovoltaic cells are made from materials called semiconductors. When light hits the cell a part of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. The energy knocks electrons loose which allows them to flow freely. The PV cells have some electric fields which forces the electrons to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a direct current (DC).
The panels are connected to the mains power supply through a device called an inverter. This inverter converts the DC current into AC current. This power is then sent to your electricity switchboard which can then be sent to power appliances throughout the house. Any surplus energy can then be sold back to the national grid where you will receive a payment through the governments new Feed-In Tariff.
The Feed-in Tariff is a new government backed scheme designed to promote the use of renewable energy installations. The government has high targets in reducing CO2 emissions and this is just one scheme. The Boiler Scrappage Scheme was another successful scheme which has finished now but with Northern gas the discounts are still available.
With the ever increasing energy prices more and more people these days are considering renewable sources of energy. By reducing our dependence on energy suppliers, we lower our bills and also do our bit for the environment. Contact Northern Gas today if you want help with your solar PV system. We offer solar hot water and heating installations.
Northern gas has a unique position as the UK's largest local supplier!
