Different Types of Boilers

Choosing a heating system with a high efficiency condensing boiler with the correct heating controls can make a huge difference to your heating bills over time If your boiler is over 10 years old you could be wasting up to half the gas you buy!

Combination boilers (or combi) are the most popular type of boiler in the UK. They are installed in around 70% of homes. They are most suited to homes with just one bathroom. They heat water instantaneously when turning the hot tap on. They are small and compact and you don't need to have a storage cylinder.

System boilers are designed to generate heat for your home as well as hot water using a separate hot water storage cylinder. More suited to larger homes with more than one bathroom. The storage cylinder can be stored anywhere in your home but they normally get put in an existing airing cupboard. There will also need to be a place for the actual boiler. Hot water is instant while there is water in the cylinder, when the water runs out you have to wait for it to reheat.

Heat only boilers are also known as open vent boilers. These again work in conjunction with a hot water storage cylinder but also have a cold water top up tank. Again they provide both central heating and hot water. Because of the need for more room these types of boiler systems are most suited to larger homes with an existing heat only boiler.
